Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born into a musical family on August 9th, 1963 in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singing star Dionne Warwick. Her first singing gig was in the choir at her church The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark in the early years of her childhood at the age of 15, she had begun singing backing vocals professionally with their mother in Chaka Khan's 1978 smash Im Every Woman. She continued to offer backing vocals for Jermaine and Lou Rawls as well as her own mother. She also did a brief stint as models on the front cover of Seventeen magazine in 1981.
